How the Walk to Cure Diabetes impacts research

Our Akron/Canton and Cleveland Walks to Cure Diabetes are coming up in a couple of weeks and JDRF depends heavily on the fund raising from these walks to support ongoing research.  Almost 35% of JDRF’s annual revenue comes from local chapter walks.  Below is a graph of the annual funding of research through JDRF grants.  Unfortunately, when the recession started in 2008, JDRF was forced to cut back on the amount of research it
was funding because of the lower amount of donations received to support research.  This is why every dollar raised during the Walk to Cure Diabetes is so important for continued funding of research.

Here are a few highlights of JDRF’s commitment to research:

  • In total, JDRF has funded more than $1.6 billion in research.
  • During the past year JDRF funded about $116 million in research grants.
  • This year represents eighth time JDRF will exceed $100M in research funding.
  • JDRF is still funding about $40 million less research today than in 2008, despite many exciting and promising areas of interest in type 1 diabetes.
  • There are simply more good areas to support than we currently have the funds to provide. With your generous help, we would like to get back on the track we were several years ago.
